Anxious and Stressed? Don’t Just Stand there, Run Instead!


Humans are natural runners. Long ago, when we still have to live on our instincts and survival, we keep that feeling of fight and flight to keep our adversaries away. We are always on the move but that was before. Today, people’s lives are as dynamic as it could get and being anxious or stressed seems to be a normal walk for people. But then a lot of us still want to get fit and while some have the luxury of time in their hands, others have to press their way into a busy schedule just to be healthy.

Why running is for you.

A lot of exercise out there can get you into shape in no time. Medical practitioners insist that you exercise to keep that body of yours strong and free from diseases, right? But running is not just any individual sport that you can do alone. It’s one of those exercise routines that you can do with so much fun without drilling a hole in your pocket. No pricey gym membership and definitely no need to enrol yourself into some fitness class just to be fit. All you need is a decent pair of running shoes, a fine trail to run and a good time in the morning and you’re on the track. Unlike any other exercise, running is fairly easy to learn, inexpensive and is a definite boon when it comes to your mental health. It relieves you of your anxiety, helps you beat your stress, tones your muscles up and gives you that perfect looking body give or take you want it. Why run? It’s not just good for your body, it’s definitely good for your heart and mind too.

Stress, anxiety and depression is a common enough issue everyone has to deal with. You stress yourself over things too much and before you know it, you’re battling over anxiety and worst, depression. It’s such a wonder how one little worry can do a lot of damage to your brain and your whole body by altering the balanced functions of your hormones. The good news is, running is much of an anti-depressant and stress reliever that is free and can be easily acquired for you. Just take that first step and leap and before you know it, you’ll be running free.

So how does running benefit your mental health? Here’s how:

Reduces stress. Whenever you run, or perform any form of exercise, you experience that runner’s high that enliven your mood up right? And that’s because your brain boosts its levels of serotonin, which is the feel good hormone in your body. So the more you run, the more you’ll feel less and less stressed every day.

Stay focused. Ever had that feeling that you had a lot to do and yet you can’t keep your mind singly on the task you’re doing? Perhaps you may want to hit the road to concentrate better. Running improves your concentration by letting you focus your mind on the track, your goals and the finish line; as imaginary as that may be. So the next time you can’t do anything right or you’re feeling a bit down, running for a quarter or half an hour might do the trick of banishing your wandering focus.

Fight depression. Your brain is the storehouse of all your memory and the seat where all connections are found in your body. When you’re stressed, your cells disconnect with each other instead of connecting themselves thus leading to depression. Depressed people don’t really feel so good about themselves right? But you can remedy that by running and keeping it a habit of yours. Running helps you fight depression by helping your brain increase the production of endorphins in your brain. Endorphins are neurotransmitters that is the body’s natural defense system booster, pain killer and feel good hormones that makes you feel so happy you want to burst out giggling and smiling all day. Depression? It’ll have no room as long as you keep 15 minutes off your time clock everyday running.

Keep a sharp mind. We all get old and there comes a time when we forget names or things that we ought to remember just too easily. Avoid that forgetting spell by running. Improve your mental ability by giving your brain a good boost of oxygen from running fast. Oxygen is your brain’s friend and running along with a breath of clean, fresh air is enough to keep your mental machine working right and working good.

Now that the secret is out, all you have to do is keep 15 minutes free from your schedule every day. The key is to maintain that running habit of yours and you’ll find that in no time, you’re not just fitter and looking better, you’re healthier and less stressed as well.
